Flanked by upper King Street and the sprawling facilities of MUSC, Radcliffeborough is a vibrant neighborhood on the Charleston peninsula, accurately blending old and new.  Populated largely by students and professors, Radcliffeborough is known for its convenience to MUSC and the College of Charleston.  Biking and walking are popular forms of transportation in this borough, with its in close proximity to shopping, dining, and cultural nightlife.

History

Home to the Cathedral of St Luke and St Paul built in 1815, many of the borough’s original residences were summer homes built by plantation owners.  Such homes were constructed during the Colonial and post-Revolutionary era to face breezes coming off the now non-existent Coming’s Creek.

Location

Located north of Calhoun Street, Radcliffeborough is enclosed by Rutledge Avenue and St Philip Street, with Morris Street as its northern border.  The private all-girls school Ashley Hall is located within this borough, and the Medical University of South Carolina can be found adjacent to it.  Also close by to the College of Charleston campus, Radcliffeborough has a youthful presence on the peninsula.  It is popular for its convenience to various campuses, as well as Charleston’s nightlife.

Education

The neighborhood is zoned for Charleston’s metro school system.  Largely concentrated by members of the academic community, the prestigious Medical University of South Carolina surrounds this community, as does the College of Charleston, providing a unique energy to the area.  There are a number of independent schools within a few miles of the area, such as Porter Gaud, a k-12 college preparatory school for both girls and boys, and Ashley Hall, a k-12 college preparatory school for girls, located within the actual borough.

Amenities

Because Radcliffeborough is a public area of downtown Charleston, there is no HOA fee.  The public amenities include green space at Morris Square, as well as being close by to King Street, offering plenty of dining establishments, ranging from bars to upscale restaurants.
