History

Built in 1906 as the Post Exchange and Recreation Hall for Fort Moultrie, this property originally served as a place where soldiers could relax, unwind and socialize. It was not uncommon for balls and dances to be held in the gymnasium, and in this building, soldiers played pool, bought supplies and got haircuts. In 1945, 1714 Middle Street was converted for use as the Post Engineer’s Office for fort Moultrie but just two years later, the fort was deactivated and most of the fort’s properties were disbursed. In the summer of ’47 the flag was lowered one final time and Fort Moultrie was officially closed. Seven years later, 1714 Middle Street was sold to the Broome family, who converted it to their single family residence. It was not until 1993 that the Broome family sold their home and the new owners completed an extensive renovation. Since 1954, only two owners have occupied this wonderful property.
