A Little Charleston History
Originally called Charles Towne after King Charles II of England, the name Charleston was adopted in the year 1783. Its past consists of the Civil War where Fort Sumter fought to protect the city, the importance of the ports and naval base during World War II and then the disaster of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. All of these major events have shaped Charleston to what it is today.
Nicknames include the Holy City, for the many steeples visible above the low-rise buildings of its city, and the Palmetto City, for the Caribbean aspect of an abundance of palmetto trees lining the area. People flock to see both the churches and the architecture making Charleston’s main industry tourism. Carriage tours and walking tours usher visitors throughout the historic neighborhoods of the Charleston Peninsula.
