Before starting the project, many of the neighbors shared personal stories from the their experience at the church. It was clearly an important part of the community and something that needed to be preserved.
Permitting for the project took 6 months to complete, due to the change in occupancy. Additionally, seismic requirements required a new slab foundation to be formed within the existing walls of the building. The concrete slab was then polished and now serves as the finished flooring.
Hugh’s total budget for the project was $200K including the purchase price. This constraint was a key factor in forcing him to look outside of the box to find unique and interesting ways to complete the initial vision. This is principally what led to making all the light fixtures and using atypical materials such as hot rolled steel and commercial overhead doors.
