Headed to the Beach? Don’t Go Without This Guide!

Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms beaches are located just off the coast of Charleston, SC. Whether you want to go body boarding, kite boarding, or surfing, this is the place to go. Visitors and residents love the peaceful small town atmosphere of Sullivan’s Island, and the Isle of Palms is always busy with kids and their pets having fun in the sun.

Sullivan’s Island & Isle of Palms – An Introduction

If you love smaller beach communities, this is the place for you. Kids are welcome, but there are no life guards stationed on Sullivan’s Island beaches. Shops, restaurants, pubs and bicycle rentals line the beaches and downtown streets, waiting to welcome you.

Isle of Palms Real Estate

Isle of Palms has a marina, a golf resort and many shops along the beaches. You can park anywhere along the streets or use the meters until 6 Pm. There are rules to follow at the Isle of Palms, so please don’t bring your fireworks or glass bottles to the beaches. There are also no bonfires, camping or motorized boats or jet skis allowed on Isle of Palms beaches.

Activities on Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms Beaches

Rent skate boards, kite boards, body boards and surf boards at Air & Earth on Coleman Blvd. They also offer lessons. For $10.00 a day you can rent a body board, for $20.00 you can rent a surf board, and for $30.00, you can rent an SUP board. If you love to skate board but need some brushing up, lessons cost $30.00 an hour. Beginner surfers, lessons cost $55.00 an hour, and for $99.00 an hour, you can learn to kite board.

There’s more than one shop on Sullivan’s Island where you can find rental equipment. The Odessy Board Shop, located just off Coleman Blvd., delivers and picks up their rentals for you at both of the islands. They have kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, surf boards and SUP boards for rent. Rental prices for surf boards are $25.00 for the day and SUP boards are $35.00.

If you’re thinking about getting around town on a bicycle, Mike’s Bikes, also located on Coleman Blvd., has all kinds of bikes for rent and the prices are quite reasonable. You can rent a BMX bike, commuter bike, mountain bike or road bike for $15.00 a day or $40.00 for a full week. They also rent all kinds of accessories needed for bike riding.

Restaurants and Pubs on Sullivan’s Island & Isle of Palms

Sullivan’s Island may be a small town, but they have lots of great places to eat. The Hop Frog cooks up a delicious barbeque sandwich and Home-Team has great chicken wings. For delicious burgers and beer, Poe’s Tavern is the place to go. Both Poe’s Tavern and Dunleavy’s Pub are pet friendly. Most of the restaurants and pubs are right on Middle Street on Sullivan’s Island.

For Isle of Palms:

Residents and guests both love Luke & Ollie’s delicious Philly cheese steak sandwiches. Enjoy a shrimp taco at the Acme Lowcountry Kitchen, and the Wind Jammer is where everyone goes for great food and live entertainment. If you want to take your dog along, Morgan Creek Grill and Red’s Ice House welcome dogs. The Five restaurant on Rutledge Avenue is also pet friendly.

Dog Friendly Beaches on Sullivan’s Island & Isle of Palms

Dogs are welcome on the beaches at Sullivan’s Island, but you have to get a permit from the town hall on Middle Street. From May to the end of September your dog can romp the beaches without a leash from 5 AM to 10 AM, but you can’t bring them to the beach at all between during the busiest hours, between 10 AM and 6 PM. After 6 PM, until 5 the next morning, they have to be kept on a leash.

Dogs are allowed at the Isle of Palms beaches, but only from April to September. They can be off their leashes from 5 AM to 8 AM, the rest of the time they must be kept on the leash. At Isles of Palms, visitors don’t have to have dog permits, but if you’re a resident, you’ll have to head on over to the town hall to get one.

Enjoy the more quiet beaches on Sullivan’s Island or the family-oriented beaches on Isle of Palms while on vacation this year. Located just off the coast of South Carolina, Charleston’s beach islands offer many types of outdoor activities, great food and fun for the whole family.
