Life in Summerville

Summerville is a small suburban town a few miles outside of downtown Charleston known for its love for nature. The town's official motto on the seal reads, "Sacra Pinus Esto" meaning, The Pine is Sacred. Summerville was first inhabited in the late 1700's following the Revolutionary War as people were trying to escape from the Charleston heat. 

Today Summerville is a quaint family town with one of the best football teams in the state. Summerville High School's coach, John McKissick is known as the "winningest" coach in America with 530 wins, 127 losses and 13 ties. 

The town's mission exemplifies how dedicated they are to making this a safe family environment for its residents. Aside from the beautiful scenery, great shopping and dining add to Summerville's charm and historic flare. 

There is all kinds of shopping but some of the best places are Aura Lee's, Craft Happy, and Teal. If golfing is more your thing then there are many places to find the right course for you. Legend Oaks Golf Club was voted among the best in the Low Country challenging all levels of golfers. Hunter Haven offers game from deer, quail and turkey and also a shooting range, 3-D archery range and sporting clays. For the history buffs Summerville offers several museums and historic buildings. Drayton Hall, Dorchester Museum and the Henry Timrod Library are some of the best places to visit. 

From mid-April through October you can find the Summerville Farmer's Market for a wonderful selection of fresh produce, baked goods, jams, jellies and craft items. Another family fun activity is visiting Cypress Gardens, a swamp-garden, where you can enjoy their trails, boat rides, a butterfly house, aquarium and reptile house. This 170- acre land is filled with beautiful nature and a rich history. 

For those just visiting or new to the area you can take several tours of the town including a free walking trail of Summerville's home and gardens.

Summerville is very close to some of the best Charleston beaches including the laid-back town of Folly Beach.
