French Quarter Charleston SC Real Estate

French Quarter Homes and Condos For Sale

Life in the French Quarter

The French Quarter is a small historic neighborhood located in historic downtown Charleston’s ‘South of Broad’ district.  It is bordered by the Cooper River, Broad Street, Meeting Street and Market Street.  The area began being called the French Quarter in 1873 when preservation efforts began for warehouse buildings on the Lodge Alley block.  The name recognizes the high concentration of French merchants in  the area.  Notable landmarks in the French Quarter include the Dock Street Theatre, the French Huguenot Church and St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church.

The French Quarter also is the home to year round Art Walks due to the area’s high concentration of art galleries.  At the center of it all is the Dock Street Theatre, the first building designed for theatrical use in the Americas which remains in operation to this day (although performances are presently suspended due to a significant renovation).  The area also boasts upscale boutiques and ample opportunities for entertainment and dining.

French Quarter Real Estate
